EWP controlled descent escape & rescue

This course equips participants with the skills and knowledge to perform controlled descent escape and rescue procedures from elevated work platforms (EWPs) in the electricity supply industry (ESI). It combines two nationally accredited units into one practical, safety-focused training experience.
Introduction:
"EWP Controlled Descent & Rescue" is a combined training course designed for workers operating in environments where elevated work platforms are used. The course covers both ground-based rescue procedures and self-rescue using controlled descent devices. Participants will learn how to respond to emergencies involving EWP malfunction or operator incapacitation, ensuring safe outcomes in high-risk scenarios. The following two units of competency will be assessed:
UETDRMP005 - Perform elevated work platform rescue
UETDRMP004 - Perform elevated work platform controlled descent escape
UETDRMP005 - Perform elevated work platform rescue
UETDRMP004 - Perform elevated work platform controlled descent escape
Target Audience:
This course is ideal for:
- ESI workers operating or working near EWPs.
- Tradespeople in transmission, distribution or rail sectors.
- Safety officers and emergency response personnel.
- Apprentices and new entrants to the electrical or infrastructure industries.
Learning Outcomes:
- Inspect and assess EWP retrieval and descent systems.
- Perform ground-based rescue of an incapacitated EWP operator.
- Execute controlled descent escape from a malfunctioning EWP.
- Apply WHS/OHS protocols during rescue and escape scenarios.
- Secure incident sites and report emergencies appropriately.
- Maintain safe approach distances from electrical apparatus.
Learning Methods:
- Instructor-led classroom sessions.
- Practical simulations using EWP equipment.
- Scenario-based rescue and escape drills.
- Group discussions and safety briefings.
- Competency-based assessments (written and practical).
Program Benefits:
- Achieve two nationally recognised units of competency: UETDRMP005 and UETDRMP004.
- Learn critical rescue and escape techniques for EWP emergencies.
- Enhance safety awareness and compliance with WHS/OHS regulations.
- Improve readiness for real-world ESI worksite incidents.
- Meet mandatory training requirements for ESI roles and refresh cycles.
Content:
- Overview of EWP types and operational risks.
- Inspection and use of controlled descent devices (CDDs).
- Ground rescue procedures and casualty handling.
- Self-rescue techniques from elevated platforms.
- Risk assessment and hazard mitigation.
- Incident reporting and site control.
